Hand Made Quilts

Over the years we have had many requests to advertise items for sale on this website.  We have consistently declined to do so with the exception of a single battlefield tour book.  However, when it comes to GETTYSBURG QUILTS we are once again happy to make another exception to our rule.

GETTYSBURG QUILTS offers faithful reproductions of Civil War era patchwork quilts.  During the war, quilts like these were pieced and sewn by family members and ladies' sewing circles across the country.  These quilts were sent to war with family members or distributed at army hospitals to the sick and wounded.

Popular Patterns:  The most popular patterns are the double four-patch, the nine-patch and the sixteen-patch.  Several "Underground Railroad" patterns are available as well.  Special orders for other patterns and sizes are accepted.

The DOUBLE FOUR-PATCH quilt, thirty two 8" X 8" blocks.  Each block contains two 4" x 4" squares and four 2" X 2" squares.  Vertical strips separate each row of blocks.  The quilt is finished with a 4" border print.  Quilt measurers 48" X 72".

The NINE-PATCH quilt, forty blocks--nine 2" squares.  Each block bordered by 2" sashing.  Three inch side borders and 2" top and bottom complete the quilt.  Finished measurements: 44" X 69".  These are the "Soldiers Quilts" sized for a cot or bedroll.  They also make fine lap quilts or wall hangings.

The MONKEY WRENCH quilt from the "Underground Railroad" series, 30 blocks 10" x 10".  Quilt top is assorted colored prints and muslin.  Muslin back.  This unique quilt, is tied rather than quilted.  Quilt measurers 50" x 60".

Materials:  All fabric is pre-washed 100% cotton.  Cotton thread.  The batting is pre-shrunk 80% cotton.  Fabrics are "period" colors--small prints in red, gold, brown and beige.  The backing is a complementary print.  Pieces are machine stitched, as the originals were.  The sewing machine was a new and welcome invention for the quilters in the 1860s.  Quilts are hand quilted, using a "utility" stitch.
