This is our favorite spot in Gettysburg. We hesitate to say so because all of Gettysburg is very special. If nothing else you have only to look at the faces of the visitors to get a feeling for that. Gettysburg is at the heart of our history and in our hearts forever.

Yet somehow walking the paths of the beautiful and reverent National Cemetery manages to bring everything we feel and cherish about Gettysburg into focus as few other places can. As you visit the shops and attractions in town it's easy to forget where you are for a moment. But once you set foot in the National Cemetery there's no mistaking that you're in Gettysburg where many thousands of Americans struggled over the future of this great land.

In the photos below we tried to capture what can't possibly be captured on film because we know that many of you will never be able to see the National Cemetery apart from these and other pictures. In these photos you'll see the numbered markers of the graves of the Gettysburg unknown, the plaques which honor the dead with poetic thoughts, the lush green of the Cemetery grounds and the cannon which remind us of the battle in which they died.

For those of you who are able to visit Gettysburg we hope you'll come and see for yourself. Here you are truly on sacred ground. Take the Ranger Walk through the National Cemetery so that a Park Ranger can explain the history of the Cemetery to you as you stroll the grounds. Licensed Battlefield Guides can also direct you tour as pictured above. If you can, we hope you'll walk the Cemetery about an hour before sundown on a quiet summer evening as we often do. Walk in silence and respect as the Park sign urges. Walk and open your heart to the sacrifice that was made on these green fields long ago.
