Park sign for Benner's
Hill on Rt. 116 about 3/4 mile out of town on your right. Now you know
how to get to East Cavalry Field too!
Park plaque describing
the action that took place here. Ewell's purpose here was to threaten
Federal positions on Culp's Hill & Cemetery Hill with the artillery
battalion of Maj. Joseph Latimer. On the afternoon of July 2nd Latimer
placed 14 guns here.
At 4:00 p.m. they opened fire.
Unfortunately for Latimer over 24 Union guns replied. In an artillery
battle that lasted for about 1 1/2 hours Latimer's position was battered
and Latimer suffered a serious wound.

Park sign commemorating
Latimer's Battalion who fought here.
There's not much to see
here. This is the only road on Benner's Hill with a turn around at the
end. Be careful driving here as there are drainage ditches that as of
yet are not very well marked. If you pull off the road to let another
car pass you may find of them the hard way as I did when I took some of
these photos!
