As you drive over Big Round Top
you'll come to the monument of the 20th Maine in the woods on your
right. A short distance past the monument is a gravel path through the
woods that will take you back there along the defensive line of the 20th
Maine. This is the first Part plaque that you'll encounter on that path.
It contains the narrative of Col. Vincent instructing Col. Chamberlain
to hold this ground at all hazards.
A short distance past the first
plaque you'll come to this one honoring the "Tenacious 20th Maine". It
tells the story of the Maine volunteer's defense of this patch of ground
and the numerous assaults of Alabamian troops that they withstood.
Next on the path you'll come to the
marker for the right flank of the 20th Maine.
Another view of the flank marker and
the rock walls of defense that surround it.
Another view of the defensive walls.
The center of the line is in the distance at the crest of the slope.
You'll see two lines of rock wall
here in this photo as we come nearer to the center of the line.
