Gettysburg Then & Now

September 24, 2008

An email from Lynn Ruggieri of Arcadia Publishing arrived recently notifying us of the upcoming publication of Gettysburg by Dolly Nasby in Arcadia's Then & Now series. Lynn asked if we might be interested in reviewing it for our visitors at Gettysburgguide.com and we eagerly agreed. Our review copy arrived only days later and we were thrilled to see that the paperback is of a size that would be quite easy to carry along on a Battlefield walk or drive.

Let's start right off with a sampling of some of the photos you'll find inside. They cover a wide range of locations listed in the Table of Contents as Beginnings, Battlefield Sites, Lincoln Square (Formerly Diamond), All around the Town, Education, Religious Organizations, and Heroes. If you've visited Gettysburg recently then you'll recognize the new Visitor Center and the First National Bank building on Lincoln Square in the "then and now" sequences below.

Some of our personal favorites included the sequences of the McPherson farm, the Evergreen Cemetery Gatehouse, the Copse of Trees, and Meade's Headquarters. As Gettysburg residents we also were captivated by the photos of town especially the one of John Burns sitting on his porch recuperating from his wounds near the current West Street. What a difference 145 years can make!

We truly enjoyed this little gem of a book. We're certain that carrying it along on your walk or drive through the Battlefield or town will really add something special to your visit to Gettysburg. It's 95 pages long with "then and now" photos on every one! Ordering information and photo credits appear below:
