The Unoffical Visitors Guide to Gettysburg exists not only to share this beloved battlefield with the Internet community but also to help orient visitors to Gettysburg before their arrival. One of the saddest things we see is the bewilderment on the faces of visitors who've come from as far away as Texas, California and Utah as they struggle with the size of the battlefield and the number of available options for touring and understanding it.

Gettysburg Diorama Preview

Very recently we were invited to attend a preview of theGettysburg Diorama. It's an HO scale historically accurate layout of buildings and landscape on the largest military diorama in the United States. It contains over 20,000 individually hand painted soliders and reproduces the town and surrounding countryside of Gettysburg as it was in 1863. It was three years in research and three years in building. And is now complete with a narrated story of the battle with sound effects and lights. Show schedules are listed below.

We attended the preview with a Civil War author about to release a new work on the action on Cemetery Ridge. He went from section of the battlefield to section voicing his amazement at the historical accuracy of what he saw. And after we all were given the 30 minute moving presentation of the events of the battle we cheered our approval in unison.

The Gettysburg Diorama battle of Gettysburg in miniature is a must see for families, especially those with children, visiting the battlefield for the first or fiftieth time. You'll walk away with vivid picture of the Union fishook defense, the topography and historical buildings of the battlefield, a points of the compass orientation, and the ability to focus in on specific points of interest as you tour in your car.

The level of detail is beyond description. This is a must see exhibit for orienting yourself to the beautiful Gettysburg battlefield. We present this to our website visitors in the same spirit in which our site was created, a non-commercial interest in helping orient Gettysburg visitors to this beloved battlefield before they arrive.
